General Notes: Dad's Eulogy

On the 11th January 1914, 8 months before World War I was declared and whilst his brothers, Cyril and Roley, chased the chooks around the house, Vern Wilfred Pollard was born. Vern was the last child to be born to Alfred and Annie Pollard.

Alfred's great grandfather, William Pollard arrived in Australia as a farm labourer aboard the "Duchess of Northumberland" in 1838 and purchased land in the Jerrawa district. Annie's great grandfather, James Holgate had arrived in Sydney aboard the convict ship "England II" in 1835 and, after obtaining his ticket of leave, had also settled in the same area.

Life in the hamlet of Rye Park at the time Dad was born was not enormously different from that experienced by his ancestors.
The wealthy would have better homes, the poor, who included the Pollard family, had the benefits of corrugated iron and maybe a wood stove but still slab timber walls. Dad recently told us that for years his Mum had a dirt floor in her house.

What a change technology had on Dad's life; telephone, electricity, refrigeration, the motorcar, television, medical breakthroughs, space travel, computers, care for the environment, the list is endless. Will one lifetime ever again see such change?

For Dad life was often a struggle. He lost his brother Miles, who died four days before his fourth birthday, at the age of two years two months. Dad sometimes spoke about how he missed losing his brother but as he was so young, his reflections would have been from a great need for companionship. Dad's sister Ivy was twelve years older and would have been working. His brothers, Roley and Cyril, were five and six years older.

Dad attended Rye Park School until he was fourteen, as it was compulsory. He endured the cruel schoolmaster, Bob Buckridge. He remained in primary school for the last couple of years, as he would have needed to go to Boorowa for High School. After school each afternoon he tended his veggie garden on Pudman Creek. He told the story of searching for melons to supplement the family food supply.

One evening he discovered an enormous jam melon miles from home. On his pushbike, with one hand on the handlebars and the other clutching a sugar bag that held the melon that rolled around his back, he set off for home. After a number of spills he proudly arrived home with his treasure.

He worked with his father, who had a number of small blocks of land in the district at places like Whoop Whoop, where they would stay overnight. We recently found Dad's initials, which he carved when he was twelve, still carved in a post near the fireplace. He talked about stick dodging, which consisted of collecting and stacking sticks on land that was being cleared.

Upon leaving school he worked as a Shearer and was one of the best at using hand blades. At other times he laboured in the hills around Rye Park ring-barking and felling trees. This was heavy manual work and was at the time of the Great Depression.

At the age of twenty-two, Dad had a house built by a local builder, Walter Irvine. It cost 675 pounds. He married a local girl but the marriage did not work out. Dad was often away from home shearing and doing other work and his wife became unfaithful.
It was in the days before the Family Law Court when divorces were very messy and very expensive. Dad lost the case and was ordered to pay enormous costs. It took him many years to repay the money he borrowed. Whilst we were cleaning up at "Rockfield", we found the records of these loans. Dad felt great shame in relation to his divorce and it was only relatively recently that he was able to share the subject with his children.

To allow him to pay off his legal bills Dad headed for Sydney where his cousin Greta helped him find a job at Good Year Tyre and Rubber Company. The work was hot, dirty and heavy and, with the outbreak of World War II, many extra hours were required to be worked as the demand for tyres escalated. Dad was lonely and depressed. He lived in cheap, poor quality accommodation so as to allow him as much spare money as possible.

He stayed at a number of boarding houses, one of which was run by Mrs Eccleston at 14 Jersey Road, Strathfield. One Saturday night Dad was wandered up Burwood Road on his way back from a trip to Cabarita when he heard music and laughter. He thought he had nothing to lose so he ventured into the dance studio.
It was Fuller's dance studio. There he met Mum. Dad often reflected on this joyous event.

The friendship of Vern and Gladys Bonsor blossomed and on Saturday, 29 April 1944, at Burwood Methodist Church, they were married. They built a house at 38 Regents Street, Regents Park. This was a challenge due to the impact of the war on the supply of building materials. On 7 November 1945 Neville arrived, followed by myself and Jeanette in 1949 and 1951.

After working 15 years at Good Years Dad found that his health could no longer cope with the conditions and shift work so on Jeanette's birthday, July 20, 1956, the Pollard family packed their belongings, including the chooks, and moved to "Rockfield", Maimuru.

I can still hear the sound of the rooster crowing whilst we filled the loaded old Bedford with petrol at the Regents Park Service station. The old Bedford was a converted Bushells Tea van with single wheels on the back, not ideal for the 1956 wet weather on "Rockfield" nor was it ideal for a family of five but it was adequate. At the time, being the one who sat on the handbrake, I may not have agreed.

Dad's vision was that "Rockfield" would be a step to him becoming a wheat and sheep farmer but that was not to be and for close to half a century, along with droughts, frosts and hailstorms, Dad was an orchardist that ventured into other farming projects including fat lambs, pigs, Friesian cows, turkeys and various crops. He was proud of what he produced and would often be heard to say to Mum that he had the best prunes at the dryer or that he topped the price at the sale yards with his fat lambs or pigs.

Dad prided himself on being a hard worker, real work that was, the stuff that generates sweat. Sitting in an office was not work to Dad. An early start and a late finish was the order of the day, although a "camp" after lunch was acceptable.

When we were kids and we were helping on the farm we were always very quiet whilst Dad was having a rest. We would hope he would go into a deep sleep and thus allow us more time to play.

When Dad built something, it had to be strong. He would select the largest corner fence post available and put it in the ground at least a foot deeper than necessary. As a provider for the family Dad worked long hours and never took a holiday. Even though times were often tough, with Mum's help, we always were well feed and clothed. Whilst he did not receive an ideal formal education he ensured that we children all completed High School and went onto further education.

Dad's real love was horses. There was Sammy the giant draught horse that was on the farm when he arrived and after he died Dobbin replaced him. Sammy used to pull the orchard spray cart for Dad who manually sprayed the trees. Both Sammy and Dobbin also pulled the spring cart that was a real assistance in pruning the fruit trees. Dad, along with the horse and cart, worked with some others on the settlement doing contract pruning. There was Bede and Narna. Dad enjoyed working with them as it allowed him to catch up on the local settlement gossip.

He also had thoroughbred horses; one or two of which raced but his main enjoyment was showing them in the local shows, especially when it meant winning against the "well heeled" big names. He won many champion ribbons.

Dad was a bit of a show-off and loved to perform. He would have loved to be on stage but he opted for being Santa Claus at the Maimuru Christmas party where he enjoyed kissing the young and not so young women. He served the community in this way for many years, as no one could be Santa like Vernie. He always added something extra to the night. Dad "hit the big time" when he was invited to be Santa at Grace Brothers in Young. He even attended Santa Claus school in Sydney.

He loved finding ways of causing a laugh by doing crazy things like having his feet out of the window of the truck whilst waiting to pick Jeanette up from the bus. He loved quoting Banjo Paterson's "The old man walked to the slip rails and he peered up the darkening track". Even saying grace had a touch of performance.

Like many better-known performers Dad struggled with depression. Whilst never reaching a clinical level it was a weight that he carried right through his life. Maybe this was somehow connected to the fact that he thought he had to prove himself. Before he broke his hip, when one of the Aged Care team arrived to visit him on the farm (or as he would say "to inspect him"), he was out mowing the lawn, obviously to show them that he was still fully fit. What gave it away was the fact that Social Worker noticed and commented on the fact that he still had his slippers on!

When I asked him what behaviour he valued most he said, "Kindness." His kindness extended to those disadvantaged and to most animals. He had a very soft spot for his mother and was very kind to her. When he had annual holidays whilst at Good Years he always would spend the time working for her.

When we had aboriginal fruit pickers come and stay he always treated them with dignity and respect. This frequently worked in his favour because Poppa Williams always made sure Vern had enough pickers.

Dad had a long Christian commitment. Maybe this commenced as a result of Grandmother Holgate, who Dad recently fondly spoke of, telling him about God. He loyally supported the local church both financially and through attendance. Dad's expectations of a church were not always met and he was prone to vary denominational labels. Unfortunately this did sometimes cause hurt to those who sought to reach out to him.

Dad valued a practical faith and whilst he briefly followed the family tradition as a lay preacher, he was much more at home with welcoming on the door or hospital visitation. He was not one for "long winded" sermons. When Young Baptist Church was opened, he donated a clock.

One of his most valued Christian experiences was when he arranged for Arthur Stace, the 'Eternity' writer to visit Regents Park Baptist men's group. I'm sure Dad valued Arthur's story.

Dad was a deacon and Secretary of Regents Park Baptist church and a deacon and treasurer at Young Baptist Church and toward the end of his life was involved with and valued greatly the support of the Salvation Army.

Dad for a number of years tireless cared for Mum. This task was not easy, as it required enormous patience to cope with Mum's dementia. The assistance of the staff from "Home Care" was invaluable during this period.

Just before Christmas 2002, Dad had a fall that broke his hip. This was the event that would move him and Mum off the farm. After a short stay in "Mercy Care" they moved to Endeavour Nursing Home at Springwood. This was a move that Dad had dreaded. It was like putting a free flying bird in a cage. Through miraculous circumstances Dad was able to room with Mum until she passed away in May last year.

During his stay in Endeavour, Dad celebrated his 90^th Birthday and appreciated greatly being joined by his Rockfield neighbours, Bruce and Carmel and a number of his nieces and nephews. In April last year, Dad and Mum celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary. Dad was impressed with the many greetings they received, including the Queen, Governor General, Prime Minister and Premier.

Shortly after this celebration, on 21^st May, Dad said goodbye to his partner of over 60 years. Dad travelled to Young to bury her, a major undertaking for someone in his state of health.

Since Mum's passing Dad appeared to be more relaxed. Maybe he felt no longer responsible for her and the challenge that provided.

During this time a local woman Joan Murray, along with Bonnie, her Golden Retriever, daily visited him and other residents at the Nursing Home. Joan was even there on Christmas day. Her happy friendly spirit was significant and was an answer to Mum's prayer that Dad would have a friend when she was gone. One time we suggested to Dad that we could go out for coffee but Dad didn't want to miss Joan's visit.

He appreciated the staff at Endeavour. They would comment that he was a pleasure to look after and never complained.

Dad gradually became more frail and on Monday 4^th April, this chapter of his life came to a close.

Within a year we have said farewell to both Mum and Dad. Whilst we deeply miss them we know they have gone to a much better place and that we will see them again.

They did not give us fame or fortune; they did however give us gifts of real value. They gave us their sincere love and the opportunity to know Jesus. We therefore consider that we have been truly blest.

General Notes: Mum's Eulogy
My mother, Gladys May Bonsor was born on 9 October 1915 in Croydon, a Sydney suburb. She was the elder daughter of Isaac and Ada Bonsor. A brother, William had died in 1913; a week after Ada had immigrated to Australia from Nottingham in England. Her husband, Isaac, a tailor, had come to Australia 6 months earlier and had found work at David Jones. After William's death, Ada was extremely lonely, and wanted desperately to return to England, but there was never any money for the fare. However, in early 1915 when she found that she was pregnant again, she became more contented and my mother was born a little Australian.

Grace, her sister, was born two years later, and John was born in 1926, when Mum was nearly 11.

When she was 5 the family moved from Croydon to Ashfield, and she started school at Ashfield Primary. She was a good student, and after Primary School, went on to Ashfield Domestic Science School. She obtained excellent results at the end of Year 8. Her wish was to complete her studies to Year 9, and perhaps gain a scholarship for further study. However, a friend of the family urged her parents to enroll her in Burwood Business College instead, and she was told she was leaving school. After 3 months at the College, her parents could not afford to pay the fees, and she had to leave. The Depression was on, but she eventually found work at Addis, making toothbrushes. She then moved into the office and, over time, became the Office Manager. She enjoyed this very much, and worked there until she was married.

Her family was Methodist, and she attended churches in Malvern Hill, Burwood and Enfield during her growing years. She was very involved in the activities of the church. A highlight for her was her attendance at the Christian Endeavour Convention in Melbourne in 1938. This was the only time that Mum journeyed out of NSW or the ACT in her entire life. Her yearning to travel was never fulfilled. When we cleaned out the house after Mum & Dad went into the Nursing Home, we found a large photograph album full of postcards. She had received these from others who had been able to make the journeys that she had only dreamed of.

During the War, Mum and Grace both became members of the Volunteer Aide Detachment (VADs). They attended Crown St Hospital to assist in caring for patients, as part of the war effort.

She and Grace loved ballroom dancing, and they attended lessons regularly. It was at Fuller's Dance Studio at Burwood that she met Dad. He had travelled to Sydney from Rye Park, near Boorowa, in search of work. He had found labouring work at the GoodYear Tyre & Rubber Company. However, he was finding life pretty tough and he was very lonely. One night he was walking along the street in front of Fullers. He heard music and decided to investigate. He was invited in to the hall. Mum could see the loneliness in his face, and she befriended him.

He too was Methodist, and their friendship developed. They were married in Burwood Methodist Church on 29 April 1944.

After their marriage, they lived with Mum's parents, who by now lived at Haberfield.
They purchased land at 38 Regents St, Regents Park. As the War was on, building materials were scarce and progress on the house was slow. They finally moved into their home when Neville was nearly 3 years old. The fibro house was built on a long block which went back towards the railway line on the top of a cutting, and they had chickens at the back.

Dad continued at GoodYears, and Geoff was born in 1949. Around this time they started to attend the Baptist Church in Regents Park. Dad had heard the singing as he walked down the street to catch the train to work. One Sunday morning he decided to attend. The fellow on the door, Mr Greenfield, gave him such a hearty welcome, that he decided to stay. Mum joined him soon afterwards. They were both baptised at the church, by Rev. Matt Smith.

Neville loved the steam trains going through the cutting at the back of the house. They would blow their whistle as they went through. He would ask Mum what train it was. She memorised the timetable, so she could tell him where the train was going. This was indicative of Mum's encouragement and interest in each child's endeavours. Her dream was to purchase a pedal car for Neville, but finances were never available.

I was born in 1951. Life settled down, and Mum enjoyed her new home. She also learnt how to drive. However, Dad's shiftwork at GoodYears was difficult for him.
The continual hard labouring work in the intense heat was playing havoc with his health, and he did not sleep well during the day.

An opportunity then came for Dad to move back onto the land. Mum did not want to move from the comforts of her home, complete with a fabulous gas stove, but she knew that Dad could not continue at GoodYears. She reluctantly agreed to leave her family and friends to start an entirely new life in the country.

It was with a deep heaviness of heart that she left Regents Park for the fruit orchard at Maimuru in July 1956. Dad had sold our 1934 Ford V8, and purchased a 2 ton Bedford Truck. This was laden with all manner of things, complete with chooks on the top. The roosters crowed in Goulburn's main street as we journeyed south-west. It was very wet, and the furniture truck got bogged at the bottom of the hill, before the ascent to the house at 'Rockfield'. Finally, on my 5th birthday, the furniture was unloaded. Mum's lovely new home at Regents Park was now replaced by an old farm house in need of repair, with rattling louvres, a fuel stove, and an outside pan toilet - and she arrived in mid-winter.

But from that point on, Mum strove to become a farmer's wife, like her sisters-in-law. She made butter and jam, she preserved fruit, and learnt how to milk a cow. She mastered the fuel stove, she stooked hay and helped with the sheep. She poddied pet lambs, and was very good at coaxing these little creatures to stay alive. She picked prunes, and picked and packed stone fruit. She had to learn to drive the old Bedford Truck which had a 'crash' gearbox - and this was no mean feat for someone who wasn't very tall. Although she learnt to do all these things, she never thought she had really 'made it'. However, during her last years on the farm she sometimes used to dwell on the fact that she had learnt to do all the farmyard tasks. She had become less critical of herself and it was only then that she started to be satisfied that she had actually achieved her goal of becoming a farmer's wife.

One thing that she enjoyed doing was the farm bookwork. Her skills as Office Manager came to the fore, and she was fastidious in recording every cent that was spent. Money was very scarce on many occasions and Mum never wasted it. As we were cleaning out the house we found seemingly hundreds of little notebooks and bits of paper with lists of figures on them. It became a bit of a joke as the hours of sifting through papers went on.

She also enjoyed doing the crossword puzzles in the Women's Weekly. This was an outlet for her, and her dictionary became very battered indeed. When the Women's Weekly started to come out monthly she stopped buying it as she did not believe this change was justified - sometimes Mum could be very stubborn!

She worked hard in the garden. She attacked the nettles and marshmallow grass with a passion until these were all but eradicated. She loved roses, tulips and dahlias, but her special flowers were her gladiolas. She would lovingly cut each spike as the first flowers appeared. She would then pluck each flower off as it died, and cut back the stem. She would not throw the stem away until the very last flower was dead. Every single flower was precious to her.

She was a great encourager to us children, and we knew that we were loved. She treated each of us as individuals. She was the catalyst behind each of us completing our secondary education, and going on to complete tertiary studies (something that she had been unable to do). By the time Geoff & I were in Senior High School we had a second vehicle which made life more flexible. She then shopped on Friday afternoons so that we could go down the street with our friends after school - or Geoff could hoon around the back roads with 'Hinton'. At one time she shopped on Thursdays so Geoff could pursue an interest in electronics at the Young Police Boys Club on that afternoon. She would stay up until midnight talking to Neville, when he came home from Teacher's College. She always welcomed our friends, and she was a very good cook. She meticulously measured every ingredient, and her cakes were never a flop. She knitted perfectly, and always had something 'on her pins'.

Mum and Dad attended the Young Baptist Fellowship, which met on Sunday afternoons, when they moved to Maimuru. They were also committed to the twice-monthly Service at the Maimuru Methodist Church. They were Foundation Members when the Young Baptist Church was formed in 1965. Mum taught Sunday School for many years, and helped Dad during his years as Church Treasurer.

Around the time that we children left home, Mum became involved in the activities of 'Christian Women Communicating International'. She attended 'Know Your Bible' studies, and the South-West Christian Women's Convention held in Young each year. She was treasurer for this event for the maximum 6 years possible.

During his later years, Dad decided that he would like to attend the Salvation Army here, and Mum came with him, being forever faithful to his wishes. As the years rolled on, she could no longer concentrate on doing the 'Know Your Bible' studies. In her early 80's she began to lose her memory and she became more dependent on Dad who took her shopping, and helped her with the household chores.

In July 2000 she was diagnosed with cancer in her jaw, and underwent major surgery to remove part of the bone. By this time, her memory was really starting to fail, and the doctors said that she would need Nursing Home Care after the surgery. But Mum proved them wrong, returning home just a few weeks later. She was only able to do this because Dad cared for her constantly and Home Care attended three times a week.

Over the next couple of years Mum and Dad both became frailer and the thread holding them together on the farm got thinner and thinner. Despite many discussions about the future, Dad would not consider leaving the farm. The family visited as regularly as possible to give support.

On 16 December 2002, that tiny thread broke when Dad fell and broke his hip. The next difficult phase began for all of us.

Mum & Dad could not return home and had to go to Nursing Home accommodation. The last time they visited the farm was 8 February 2003. In contrast to a very wet 1956, a severe drought was in full swing.

Mum had had a great deal of difficulty in adjusting to farm life as she had been a real city girl. However, as she reached her 80's she became a real admirer of her surroundings and the familiarity of the farm. She was devastated when she & Dad were unable to continue there.

For a number of years the family had had a certain dread about what would happen about the farm when this time came as none of us lived close by. We put it to the back of our minds as it was all in the 'too hard basket'. But when the time came, God in His goodness provided an angel in the form of Bruce Edgerton, a fantastic neighbour. With his amazing help we finally shut the gate of the farm on my 52nd birthday, 47 years to the day since we arrived.

Mum gradually became more confused over the coming months and she became physically frailer. The last time we were able to take her out of the Nursing Home was to Neville & Sylvia's 3 weeks ago when we gathered to celebrate Mum & Dad's Diamond Wedding Anniversary. She had been unwell the week before, and she was not really connected to the occasion or the message from the Queen. Her health then deteriorated rapidly and she slipped into eternity early last Friday morning.

Mum had made a commitment to Jesus Christ when she was a child. She kept this faith throughout her life, and she served Him faithfully in her small corner of the world. She rejoiced that her three children had become Christians and had all married Christians. She had a real heart for prayer, praying for many missionaries, and those close to her. She prayed for her children and grandchildren faithfully. She was never judgemental, and always had a listening ear. One of the things I found most frustrating when she lost her memory was the fact that we could no longer have the rousing discussions we used to have, and she no longer understood or remembered. Mum had a fairly low self-esteem in many ways, but she always prided herself in her mental ability - this ability had now been taken away. But she did not fear death, knowing that she would meet her Saviour, and be with Him forever.

Am I sad that she has passed away? My real mother passed away long ago. The grieving process has been long and difficult. As her dementia took hold the intelligent, caring mother I once knew gradually became disorientated and distant. With her death, this long period of grieving is now mixed with the feeling of relief and joy as she is with her Lord forever.

Mum can now say with the apostle Paul:
'The time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness' (2 Tim 4:6-8)

As I have spent the last couple of days reflecting on her life, I have come to the conclusion that Mum gave me everything that her resources would allow. For that I am grateful, and so very very privileged.

The death occured in Boroowa District Hospital recently of Mrs Harriet Ann Pollard of Rye Park, at the age of 66 years. The late Mrs Pollard, who was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs William Holgate of Rye Park, where she was born and resided all her life. She was loved and respected by all who knew her generous nature and many kindly acts.
She married Alfred Pollard of Rye Park 48 years ago, and he is left to morn her loss, together with three sons Cyril and Roley of Young, and one daughter Ivy (Mrs Crossley of Wargeila). She is survived by two sisters, Selena (Mrs J.C.Tickner of Canberra) and Martha (Mrs G.Pearsall of Pudman) Two brothers, Albert (Rye Park) and Frank (Young). She also leaves 9 Grandchildren. One son Myles (Miles), predeceased her, also one sister, Amy (Mrs J.Cooke of Goulburn), and one brother George (Grenfell) predeceased her.
After a short service at the Rye Park Methodist church, conducted by Rev. A.T.Newton, (1947-1950) of Boorowa, the funeral left for Rye Park Cemetery where internment took place in the Methodist portion. Rev. A.T.Newton officiated at the graveside.

Ada used to say that she and Isaac lived next door to each other, and their older sisters used to push them along together in their prams. - A friend of Isaac's urged him to come to Australia and work, as the workplaces were unionised, and pay rates were better. In England overtime was worked in the good times, at no extra pay, then there would be periods of no work - no pay. Isaac did not want to be a tailor, but his father arranged for him to be indentured to a tailor, and he had no say in the matter.
Ada's mother could not read or write. Ada taught her enough literacy skills to enable them to communicate by letter, Ada's generation was the first to have free primary schooling.
Ada used to say that she and Isaac used to walk through Sherwood Forest, of Robin Hood fame, when they were going together ('courting').
Ada worked doing canniely? work before she was married, this was a sort of fancy sewing to put on collars and cuffs. At one stage she had a Jewish employer. He apparently used to have the factory cleaned meticulously before Passover, and there was a ban on leavened bread during this time. Ada said they used to smuggle bread in to eat. Apparently there was a violent storm one night when she and Willie were coming to Australia. Everyone on board ship was terrified, and went up on deck. She tied Willie to herself with a scarf and they went to bed. She thought, if the ship sank, at least they would die together. She went to sleep. Next morning it was calm. She said everyone was amazed that she went to bed and to sleep.
Ada woke up one morning, after Willie's death, with white hair. This, apparently was a result of the shock and stress. She used to cover her head with a scarf when she went out as she was so embarrassed. Her hair colouring never returned.
Isaac passed away whilst he and Ada were on holidays in Murwillumbah. Prior to this he used to always fall asleep when he sat down. Apparently he went to the doctors for a cheek up - that probably wasn't related to his sleeping! Gladys told me he came home and said - 'I told the doctor - are you trying to scare me? It is my understanding that he had a stroke.

ARRIVED: Arrived in Sydney, Australia on 20 September 1913 aboard the Commonwealth (6616 tons) from London. This was seven months after Isaac arrived. The ships master was E.M.H.Cooper. Passenger List - State Records Office - NSW.

Married 60 Years - Diamond Wedding - 4th October 1871 (per D.J.H.)Sixty years of married life were celebrated by Mr & Mrs William Holgate of Rye Park, who were married on October 4th, 1871.
The Diamond Wedding was observed with a quiet family reunion, at which 48 people were present. With one exception all relatives including Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren were present for the festivities. Numbered among the guests were Mrs Holgate's brother, Mr Phillip Waters accompanied by his son and daughter-inlaw.
Mr Holgate, who was the eldest son of the late Mr & Mrs William Holgate (Senior) of Jerrawa, was born at "Keswick" near Gunning on September 6th 1852. His wife was formally Miss Mary Ann Waters, eldest daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs John Waters of Gunning, came to Australia at the age of three, with her parents. The family coming to Australia in the old sailing ship "Tan Tivvy". She was a native of Weston, Colville, Cambridgeshire, England., and was born on June 26th, 1851.
Mr & Mrs Holgate were loyal Methodists; they were married by the Rev. Bernard Kenny. Mr & Mrs Holgate were members of the Primitive Methodist Church until the Union was brought about in 1902, and sice then have been loyal Methodists. For many years Mr Holgate served his church as a Local Preacher in the Boorowa Circuit until advancing years and failing eyesight brought about a cessastion of his labours.
Bridesmaid at the 1871 wedding was Miss Mary Ann Granger, daughter of the late Mr & Mrs David Granger of Collector. She, afterwards married Mr David Wheatley who was Best Man at the Mr & Mrs Holegate's Wedding.
The recent Diamond Wedding celebration marked the first occasion on which the family had been united since Mr & Mrs Holegate's children had married.
After refreshments had been dispensed, Rev. Barker, Methodist minister of Cowra, and formerly of the Boorowa Circuit, conducted a short service at their home.
"Sixty Years, Wednesday October 4th 1931" was inscribed on the two decker Wedding cake, made and decorated by the eldest daughter - Mrs J.C.Tickner, of Canberra.
They have many descendants: Of the family of nine children, seven survive. They are George (Grenfell), Albert (Rye Park), Frank (Young), Mrs J.C.Tickner (Canberra), Mrs A. Pollard (Rye Park), Mrs J.Cooke (Goulburn)and Mrs G.S.Pearsall (Rye Park). There are 30 Grandchildren, three of whom are married, and 2 Great Grandchildren.

DEATH: Mr William Holgate Died April 23rd, 1932. (per D.J.H.)
There passed on 23rd April, 1932, a very old and respected resident of the little township of Rye Park, in the Boorowa circuit, in the person of Mr William Holgate at the age of 79 years.Mr Holgate was a loyal member of the Methodist Church. He was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs William Holgate of Jerrawa, and was born at Keswick, near Gunning.
He married Miss Waters, eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Waters of Gunning. They celebrated their diamond jubilee of their married life with a family reunion on 4th October last.
The Family alter was raised in their home from the beginning of the home life. Prayers were a part of the daily exercises throughout.
Mr. Holgate was of quiet disposition and his honest and upright life had won him many friends.During his failing health, he was always bright and cheerful.
Mr Holgate's name stood as the oldest local preacher in the Boorowa Circuit. He was also a local preacher in the Yass Circuit before the Boorowa Circuit was formed, but on account of his age and failing eyesight, he had not been able to take active work for some time.
His remains were laid to rest in the Rye Park Cemetery on Monday, 25th April, in the presence of a huge gathering of friends and relatives.
A special memorial service was held in the Church at Rye Park on the following Sunday. The Church was suitably draped by friends of the deceased, and was filled, showing the high esteem in which he was held. The service was conducted by Rev. G.A.Little.
Mr Holgate is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters, thirty Grandchildren and three Great Grandchildren.
The sons are George (Grenfell), Albert (Rye Park), Frank (Young).The daughters are Mrs J.C.Tickner (Canberra), Mrs A.Pollard and Mrs G.S.Pearsall (Rye Park), also Messrs Edward Holgate (Rye Park), Mark (Ryde), and Stephen (Grenfell) are brothers. While his surviving sisters are Mrs Atkins (Dalton), Mrs S.Pollard (Castle Hill), Mrs Olysen and Mrs Gale of (Goulburn).

His mother was Harriet, aged 36 and born in Groby, Leicestershire. William Joseph was a Lace Threader, and he had six siblings: Elleanor aged 15 - Lace Winder, Isaac aged 11 - Lace Threader, Thomas (8), Arthur (6), Sarah A (4) and Harriet (1). Thomas and Arthur were 'Scholars' and the place of birth for all the children was Old Radford, Notts.
Next I looked at the 1891 census, and found the family at 16 Stansfield St, Lenton, Nottingham, Notts. William was still a lace maker and they were living with daughter Eliza and son Isaac, aged 5." - Dave Leek.

1871 - They were living at George Street, Radford. Her mother was stated as Harriett. Her father was still a cotton spinner along with her brother, William E. Elizabeth had an occupation of Cotton Doubler. The record mentions another sister, Eliza aged 9.
1881 - Elizabeth Bonsor 27, a Lace Clipper, is married to Wm Joseph Bonsor 34 a Lace Maker. They have a daughter, Eliza, aged 13 and a son Isaac, aged 5. They live at 5 Doubleday Yard, Radford, Nottinghamshire.
1891 - Elizabeth 37 is living at 16a Stansfield Street with William Jos 34, Eliza 13 and Isaac 5. There is also a 1891 census record where the surname is spelt Bonser.
1901 - At 16a Stansfield Street, William Joseph is identified as a widower. GVP

1851 census gave an address of 86 Forest Side. Thomas Bestwick 60, Sarah Bestwick 60, William Leavers 28 and Susannah Leavers, also aged 28 were recorded. Josiah was 7.
1861 census identified that he was living at Radford with his parents and was aged 7 (according to the Ancestry Index) and a lacemaker. This would mean he was born about 1854. However the handwritten original census document is hard to decipher and it could read 17. This would match his age on the 1851 census which identifies he was born about 1844.
The 1891 census identified his occupation as Lacemaker and living at 25 Beresford, St., Radford, Nottingham, England. GVP

Checking the 1851 census showed three Charlotte Marshalls that were born in Lincolnshire around 1851, one was 2 months old and lived at 8 Race Course Road, Lincoln, Lincolnshire. This would therefore appear to be our Charlotte. GVP

Milton Alchin identies "Benjamin bought block # 10 consisting of 33 acres at Jerrawa on 24/9/1856. When the railway came through in July 1876 it took a corner of Benjamin's block. The railway ran between William's block and block # 11 and Benjamin's block which divided these two blocks."

On Sunday afternoon 2nd November, 1902 the remains of the late Mr. William Holgate, Senior, (Who died the previous morning at the residence of Mr Olzen, Cullerin) (Son in law) were interred in the Wesleyan portion of the General Cemetery.
Rev. A. Cooper of Gunning conducted the service. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends.
Deceased, who had reached the age of 76 years, was an old and respected resident of the district, was a brother of Mr James Holgate Senior, of the "Rockstone Vale" Dalton.
At the afternoon service in the Methodist Church on the 9th Nov, inst. special mention was made by the Rev. A Cooper of the life and death of Mr. Holgate.

After a very short illness, lasting but a few days, the death of Mrs William Holgate Senior, took place at her residence, Jerrawa, on Friday night, immediate cause of death being blood poisoning.
The deceased was the daughter of the late Mr Edward Roffe. Besides her husband, leaves a large family of children, and a big circle of friends and relations in the district.
Her remains were interred in the Wesleyan Cemetery on Sunday afternoon in the presence of a very large gathering. Rev. A. Cooper officiated at the grave.

Also in the house is Elizabeth Bonsor, step-daughter aged 35 born in Lenton, Notts. This is almost illegible but I think she was a widow. Her occupation is 'Lace Dresser'. There is also Eliza, aged 12 a lace mender, and a grandson William Bonsor aged 9 (I think)." Dave Leek.

1. JOHN HOLGATE and JAMES HOLGATE were indicted, for that they, on the 1st of October, at St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, about four o'clock in the night, the dwelling -house of John Thompson, feloniously and burglariously did break and enter, with intent the goods in the said dwelling -house, feloniously and burglariously to steal, and feloniously and burglariously stealing there in 2 gallons measure of brandy, value 3 pounds.; 1 gallon measure of shrub, value 16s.; and 2 bottles, value 6s.; the goods the said John Thompson.
JOHN THOMPSON. I am a publican, and live at No. 113, Long-lane, in the parish of St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey. On the 30th of September, I went to bed, leaving my cellar safe, at a quarter to eleven o'clock. I am quite certain the listenings were quite safe. I go to my cellar from the dwelling-house, there is a flap outside the house, which is only used to take in liquor. I am master of the house, it is my dwelling-house. I fastened the cellar flap by three bolts. I was alarmed about four o'clock in the morning by the policemen, William Shields and Thomas Bradley Beck, it was not light. I opened the window, got a light, and came down. I opened the door, let the policemen in, and they sent me back wards. I went towards the cellar door, and found that open. I had shut it at night, the back door leading into my yard was open. I had left that shut and fastened, on entering the cellar, I found the cellar flap also broken open, the bolts were bent, and partly off. I found nobody there. I missed a bottle, containing two gallons of brandy, and a stone bottle, containing shrub. I am sure they were in the cellar the night before, at a quarter before eleven o'clock. I had seen the prisoner, John Holgate, the morning before, he helped the brewer's man to put two barrels of ale into my cellar. I never saw him before, to my knowledge. I am sure he is the man. I saw him in custody of the policeman close to my door that very morning when I was alarmed, the hinges of the cellar flap were wrenched out of the wood work.
Cross-examined by MR. PHILLIPS. Q. Were you the last person up in the house? A. No; my wife was, she is not here. My pot-boy slept in the house, he had gone to bed before me. I took the key of the cellar up to the bedroom with me when I went to bed, nobody could get to the cellar.
THOMAS BRADLEY BECK. I am a policeman. About three o'clock on the morning in question, I went down a passage by the side of the prosecutor's house, which leads to his cellar when I got down, I saw a man standing by the side of Thompson's cellar flap it was the prisoner, James Holgate. I took him into custody, and asked what he was doing there, he said he had been drinking with his brother at Dockhead, and had come down there to ease himself. Dockhead is near Rotherhithe. I told him he must go with me to the station-house. I took him there, and then returned to the passage, and found the prisoner, John Holgate, in the passage, he was five or six yards from where I had found his brother. I asked him where he came from, he said he had been lying down there asleep. I asked him how long he had been lying there, he said it might be an hour, or it might be two or three hours, for what he knew. I took him into custody. I took him nearer to the cellar flap, and knocked my foot against a stone bottle, which I have here. I examined, and found the cellar flap open. I found another stone bottle near the one I first found, one contained brandy and the other shrub. The passage is no thoroughfare, there are some small gardens at the bottom, but it is no thoroughfare. I produce the bottles.
Cross-examined. Q. Is there not a thoroughfare to some cottages down the passage? A. There is a dwelling-house, and there is a thoroughfare to that. It was about three o'clock when I took James Holgate. I will not be positive that it had struck three, the station-house is nearly a quarter of a mile from where I took him. Inspector Fagan discharged him. I did not observe the cellar flap at the time I took James, I did not see any thing amiss in it. I had not time to examine it. I believed it was shut, it was nearly half an hour after I took James that I returned, there was plenty of time to open the flap.
THOMAS JOHN READY (policeman M 104.) I was on duty on the 30th of September, in Long-lane, Bermondsey, and saw the two prisoners between one and two o'clock, walking together within sixty or seventy yards of Mr. Thompson's house. John Holgate asked me, "Is this Long-lane?" I said, "Yes", he asked me if I knew where the Rose and Flower was. I said, "No". I turned round, saw a constable passing, and asked him in their hearing, and he said, "It may be the Rose and Crown?". "That is it," said the prisoner, John Holgate, he told them where it was, and they both went away. I am positive they were together.
MR. THOMPSON. The sign of my house is the Rose and Crown. I can swear to both these bottles. I had not had them long.
FRANCIS FAGAN . I am inspector of the police. I was at the station-house, and remember the prisoner, James Holgate, being brought there by the witness, Beck. I discharged him, he stated to me that he had been to see his brother at Dockhead, that he had been drinking, and lost his way, and turned up the court to ease himself, about an hour after he was discharged, the other prisoner was brought in. I detained him, and sent a constable in pursuit of James Holgate.
Cross-examined. Q. Before you discharged him, had you taken his address? A. I did, he gave me, "No. 4, Picket-place, Temple-bar", it was not Crown-court, Picket-place.
WILLIAM SHIELDS (policeman M 157.) I examined the cellar flap, and we afterwards went to find the prisoner, James Holgate, I went into the Strand, and found him in Wych-street, Strand. I believe there is a Picket-place in the Strand. I found him in a corn wagon in Wych-street. I took him to the station-house. I did not make him any promise or threat. I asked where he had been last night, this was about twelve o'clock in the day time, there were two or three men in the wagon besides him. I called out "Holgate", he came out of the wagon, and said, "My name is James Holgate", he was sitting or leaning on the corn sacks. I asked where he had been last night, he said he was at home last night at his own place by ten o'clock, and he could prove it. I asked him, "Have not yon been over the water last night?", he said, "No, I have not", the station-house he was at is on the Surrey side of the river.
Cross-examined. Q. How did you find out the wagon he was in? A. From information I received; I had gone to his own place. I do not know what address he gave at the station-house.
COURT. Q. How could you find his lodging, if yon did not get it at the station-house? A. I got it at the brewhouse which supplied the prosecutor with beer, it is close by Temple-bar.
John Holgate. I leave my defence to my Counsel.
James Holgate. I leave it to my Counsel.

HISTORY: Location of the Rose and Crown.
David Luck, Senior Archivist at the London Metropolitan Archives, has researched the street number of the Rose and Crown and has advised Jeanette Campbell of the following change:
"According to the London County Council's 'List of Streets and Places within the Administrative County of London' dated 1901, Long Lane appears to have been renumbered in May 1879 when Long Lane was altered to incorporate the neighbouring Church Street and White Street.

Having checked the plan associated with this alteration, it appears that in 1879, number 113 became 82 [Long Lane], and 134 became 124 which unfortunately does not support the information you have been given. Number 134 (which became 124) is, however, marked on the map as 'PH', usually denoting 'public house'.

We regret that we have no record of any earlier alterations to the street's numbering."


BIOGRAPHY: Convict Arrivals 1788-1842. 1835 indents - Fiche 714, page 124.

BIOGRAPHY: Came to Australia as a convict in 1835 .Refer "Convict Arrivals 1788 - 1842" page 124 (Fiche 714 1835 Indents) James aged 28 (recorded on indent as 24 but this would appear to be incorrect) arrived on the England II with his brother John (aged 32). The ship's master was Thomas Baron and the surgeon superintendent,Obediah Pines. The ship contained 230 male convicts with no deaths recorded on the journey. They arrived on Sept 28, 1835. John (35-2023) is listed as married with children one boy and one girl. He came from Essex and was a Farm servant. It is recorded that he was a protestant. He was convicted of housebreaking and was sentenced to life at Central Criminal Court Nov 24 1834. Dark ruddy complexion,brown hair, hazel eyes and 5' 5" tall. Distinguishing feature - scar under right eye, perpendicular scar on centre of forehead with sc arson centre chin and over left eyebrow. Top of finger missing on right hand. It is recorded that he could read but not write. He received a Conditional pardon (CP 48/2000) and a ticket of Exceptional Leave(43/2327).

It is recorded "The family story was that they saw a lady in need of aid, and went and got some brandy to save her life".
"In 1842 James Holgate was converted to Christianity under the Ministry of Rev. Lightbody at Bringelly."
"James Holgate was granted a ticket of leave (No. 2327) in 1843 at Penrith, (No. 8842) in 1847. He received a conditional pardon on Dec 1, 1848 the condition being that he did not return to England. The Governor of NSW who issued the pardon was Sir Charles Augustus Fitzroy. His release in 1848 was 14 years after his conviction in 1834 and he was now 41 years old.

BIOGRAPHY: Petition to be re-united with his family.
James Holgate requested "his family may be sent to this colony at the expense of Government". This was done via a petition, dated January 21st, 1838, to Lieut. Col. Kenneth Snodgras. The petition was rejected on the grounds that he was "Not entitled to apply until he has been seven years in the colony; his sentence being life."
The petition only records two children; William, aged 10 years, and Eliza, aged 7 years. No mention is made of Stephen. Maria's place of residence was Parish of St. Clements, Strand, London.

BIOGRAPHY: Another Story on James and Maria Holgate. James and Maria were born and lived in England. Here they married and had three children. Two boys and a girl. They were William, Eliza and Stephen. Stephen died on the way out to Australia and was buried at sea. James Holgate (my grandfather) was sent out from England with a ship load of convicts. (He saw a woman in need of aid, and he went and got some brandy to save her life.) He was caught stealing and charged with theft, then sent to Australia. His wife was left with the children to battle for survival. A rich and kind lady that Grandmother worked for, came to her help, and paid her passage out, and supplied her with two beautiful trunks made of cedar wood, filled with clothing, etc. Also furniture to set up a place for her when she arrived in Australia. When she arrived at Campbelltown, where Grandfather was in prison, the Governor was so kind, and let them see each other. In fact, my Dad said he left the key in his cell door. My Dad was born at Campbelltown. Later they came to "Rockstone Vale", Dalton. The Holgate's still own and live on that land. Granted a pardon after 14 years, but never to return to England. BIOGRAPHY: They came to Dalton (or Joroway as it was called then) about 1850. The 30 acres 2 roods of land were bought at auction. Known as "Rockstone Vale", (this would be some of the land Jonathon Holgate had in later years). Deeds applied for 30 July, 1852. Issued 15 Nov 1852. 30 pound, 10 shillings. Jerrewa Creek. Rent of Lease 1863. 110 freehold acres. one pound. County King, Parish Dalton.
Mention of land purchases is also recorded in the Government Gazette, 12th Oct. 1852.

Unclaimed Letters: The Government Gazette records that James had an Unclaimed Letter at Campbelltown in August, 1846 and one at Yass on 1st Jan. 1854.

DEATH: Paper Clipping in DJH information.
James was born at Stanford Rivers, Essex, England. On March 28 1807. He was married to the present Mrs. Holdgate in July 1827. He came to the colony in 1835. In 1842 he was converted under the ministry of the Rev. Lightbody at Brinjelly. In 1864-65 he joined our people, the Primitive Methodist Church, and fell into our ranks to rise to everlasting victory. For fifteen years before his death, on July 9th, 1886, he was bedridden, all of which he bore with Christian fortitude and patience. The last forty-eight hours of his life were exceedingly painful but he was conscious to the last. We visited him on Monday before his death and found him peaceful and confident. In fact we always enjoyed visiting him, his countenance was always lighted up with happiness, and his responses to our prayers were weighty. He had one peculiar wish - namely - that no funeral sermon should be preached and so we refrained. His body was interred at Dalton in the Family Burial Plot. We trust we shall all meet him at God's right hand.

"Maria was a laundress and worked for a wealthy family in England after James was transported to New South Wales. She was described as being a shortish, small woman. The family for whom she worked treated her well and paid the fare for her and her 3 children to come to New South Wales to find her husband James. In addition to the fare the generous family provided Maria with two beautiful cedar trunks filled with clothing plus some furniture to set up house in N.S.W. She sailed for Sydney probably in 1840. Her youngest son Stephen, died on the voyage and was buried at sea. She arrived in Sydney probably in early 1841 and went to live at Campbelltown where James was held as convict. The Governor was so kind that he let them see each other. In fact he left the key in his cell door. James and Maria had a son James (Junior) nine months after Maria arrived and he was born at Campbelltown."

General Notes: BIOGRAPHY: "The 1841 census shows Willm Bonser (aged 48) living in Radford with his wife Ellinor (aged 42) and children Emma (20), Joseph (15), John (14), Isaac (12), Mary (10) and Eliza (2) - all born in Radford. Many ages on the 1841 census were rounded to the nearest 5 years.
I then looked on the IGI for the marriage of William and Eleanor. I found it on 6th Feb 1826 at Radford, Notts to ELLEANOR LEATHERLAND. I found Elleanor's christening on the IGI - 15th December 1799 in Radford.
I then found an earlier marriage for William Bonsor to Mary Bowles on 10th August 1814 at Lenton, Nottingham (where 'step-daughter' Elizabeth was born). It appears that Mary died and William remarried. I found Elizabeth's christening on the IGI - christened 15th November 1814 in Lenton (there is a duplicate entry for Radford, for some reason). By copying the IGI batch number for this christening, I then searched for other christenings at the same place where the parents were called William and Mary. This produced the following:
Hannah christened 12th May 1816, Emma christened 16th May 1818, Emma christened 26th August 1819, Joseph christened 7th July 1822. Of course it is not impossible that another William and Mary Bonsor christened children at the same place in this time period, but the IGI doesn't show another William Bonser marrying a Mary in Lenton or Radford at this time. My guess is that the first Emma probably died in infancy and they named the next child Emma as well.
Finally, I used the IGI to find a christening for William Bonser at Coleorton, Leicestershire on 2nd November 1793. The parents were Thomas Bonser and Mary Marsden. I found Elleanor Leatherland's christening - 15th December 1799 at Radford, Notts - parents were John Leatherland and Hannah Daft." Dave Leek.

The following account is extracted from 'Early Yorkshire Families' and describes the descent of the Thoresby and Staveley families from Gospatric son of Archil:
"The traditional pedigree of the Thoresby family was due to a Cottonian roll, compiled in the time of Henry VI and now lost, which was printed by Roger Gale
in 1722. The descent given there was from Gospatric son of Archil through his son Dolfin. Both A. S. Ellis and Farrer were not satisfied of the existence of a
son of Gospatric named Dolfin. A charter, however, is now available, cited in the Hebden section below, in which Gospatric is described as the grandfather of
Uctred son of Dolfin." [Hebden Section - The family descended in the male line from Dolfin son of Gospatric son of Archil. Until recently no proof had been
found that Dolfin was a son of Gospatric, as stated in a fifteenth-century genealogy. But a charter is now available recording that Roger de Mowbray enfeoffed

Gospatric or Cospatric (from the Cumbric "Servant of Saint Patrick "), (died after 1073), was Earl of Northumbria , or of Bernicia , and later lord of sizable estates around Dunbar . While his ancestry is uncertain, his descendants held the Earldom of Dunbar , later known as the Earldom of March , in south-east Scotland until 1435.
Background
Gospatric is often said to have been a son of Maldred son of Crínán of Dunkeld .[1] If this is correct, Maldred was apparently not the son of Crínán's known wife Bethóc , daughter of the Scots king Malcolm II , as Gospatric's descendants made no such claim when they submitted their pleadings in the Great Cause (though according to this link his descendant, Patrick the Seventh Earl of Dunbar , did indeed make a claim to the throne during these pleadings) to determine the succession to the kingship of the Scots after the death of Alexander III in 1286.[2] Alternatively, rather than being descended from a half-brother of King Duncan I (Donnchad mac Crínáin), Gospatric may have been the youngest son of Earl Uchtred the Bold (died 1016). Another reconstruction would make Gospatric the grandson of Uchtred's discarded first wife, Ecgfritha, daughter of Aldhun , Bishop of Durham , through Sigrida, her daughter with Kilvert son of Ligulf.[3] Whatever his parentage may have been, Gospatric was clearly an important figure in Northumbria and Cumbria , with ties to the family of Earl Uchtred.
The Life of Edward the Confessor , commissioned by Queen Edith , contains an account of the pilgrimage to Rome of Tostig Godwinson , Earl of Northumbria. It tells how a band of robbers attacked Tostig's party in Italy, seeking to kidnap the Earl. A certain Gospatric "was believed because of the luxury of his clothes and his physical appearance, which was indeed distinguished" to be Earl Tostig, and succeeded in deceiving the would-be kidnappers as to his identity until the real Earl was safely away from the scene. Whether this was the same Gospatric, or a kinsman of the same name, is unclear, but it is suggested that his presence in Tostig's party was as a hostage as much as a guest.[4]
Harrying of the North
After his victory over Harold Godwinson at Hastings , William of Normandy appointed a certain Copsi or Copsig, a supporter of the late Earl Tostig, who had been exiled with his master in 1065, as Earl of Bernicia in the spring of 1067. Copsi was dead within five weeks, killed by Oswulf , grandson of Uchtred, who installed himself as Earl. Oswulf was killed in the autumn by bandits after less than six months as Earl.[5] At this point, Gospatric, who had a plausible claim to the Earldom given the likelihood that he was related to Oswulf and Uchtred, offered King William a large amount of money to be given the Earldom of Bernicia. The King, who was in the process of raising heavy taxes, accepted.[6]
In early 1068, a series of uprisings in England, along with foreign invasion, faced King William with a dire threat. Gospatric is found among the leaders of the uprising, along with Edgar Ætheling and Edwin, Earl of Mercia and his brother Morcar . This uprising soon collapsed, and William proceeded to dispossess many of the northern landowners and grant the lands to Norman incomers. For Gospatric, this meant the loss of his earldom to Robert Comine and exile in Scotland. King William's authority, apart from minor local troubles such as Hereward the Wake and Eadric the Wild , appeared to extend securely across England.[7]
Gospatric joined the invading army of Danes , Scots , and Englishmen under Edgar the Aetheling in the next year. Though the army was defeated, he afterwards was able, from his possession of Bamburgh castle, to make terms with the conqueror, who left him undisturbed till 1072. The widespread destruction in Northumbria known as the Harrying of the North relates to this period.
Exile
In 1072 William the Conqueror stripped Gospatric of his Earldom of Northumbria,[8] and he replaced him with Siward's son Waltheof, 1st Earl of Northampton .
Gospatric fled into exile in Scotland and not long afterwards went to Flanders . When he returned to Scotland he was granted the castle at "Dunbar and lands adjacent to it" and in the Merse by King Malcolm Canmore .[9] This earldom without a name in the Scots-controlled northern part of Bernicia would later become the Earldom of Dunbar.
Gospatric did not long survive in exile according to Roger of Hoveden 's chronicle:
[N]ot long after this, being reduced to extreme infirmity, he sent for Aldwin and Turgot, the monks, who at this time were living at Meilros , in poverty and contrite in spirit for the sake of Christ, and ended his life with a full confession of his sins, and great lamentations and penitence, at Ubbanford, which is also called Northam , and was buried in the porch of the church there.
He was the father of three sons,[8] and a daughter named Uchtreda , who married Donnchad II of Alba , the son of King Malcolm Canmore.

Dolfin , who seems to have received from Malcolm the government of Carlisle . Dolfin has also been identified with Dolfin de Bradeley and is believed to be the progenitor of the Bradley, Staveley, De Hebden, and Thoresby families.

Gospatric is one of the central characters of the novel "Warriors of the Dragon Gold" by Ray Bryant. The author supports the version that he is the youngest son of Earl Uchtred, so he is named Gospatric Uchtredsson in the book.
